Getting to the Heart of the Holidays: Fond Memories of My Past Celebrations

I love the diversity of the holiday season. There are many different celebrations in December, one of which may reflect your own heritage and belief system. My father was a minister in a small farming community in Oregon when I was growing up, and our traditions rooted in Christian beliefs. I looked forward to participating in Christmas pageants at school and church.

I look back fondly on the memory of our youth group being transported by a tractor-drawn wagon filled with hay bales, scrabbling out to sing Christmas carols in front of homes throughout the rural community. I remember visiting Lipman’s Department Store lining up for a cookie from the Cinnamon Bear and hoping he wouldn’t recognize me as my brothers and I went back for seconds…and thirds. I remember trimming our fresh Christmas tree with colored lights and tinsel, which my mother insisted had to be hung individually.

What I don’t remember (except for a couple) are the gifts I received. As I have grown older, I have come to realize that what matters most are the traditions that come from the time we spend with each other. Time spent with friends and loved ones adds to the texture and richness of our lives. It is truly the greatest gift of all. This year, no matter what holiday and traditions you celebrate, my wish for you is the gift of time.

Change On The Horizon: WA State Agency Law

On January 1, 2024, important revisions to the law that governs real estate brokerage relationships (RCW 18.86) in Washington State – otherwise known as the “Agency Law” – become effective. These are the first significant revisions since the Agency Law took effect in 1997. The revisions, which are explained in detail in this bulletin and set forth in Senate Bill 5191, include the following:

  • Requiring real estate firms to enter into a written brokerage services agreement with a buyer as soon as reasonably practical after commencing real estate brokerage services for the buyer;
  • Changing the term “dual agent” to “limited dual agent” to reflect that a broker representing both a buyer and a seller in the same transaction is limited in the representation that the broker can provide;
  • Giving buyers and sellers the clear choice whether to consent to an individual broker acting as a limited dual agent by requiring the consent to limited dual agency to be separately initialed by the consumer;
  • Clarifying that a broker owes certain duties in RCW 18.86.030 to all parties in a transaction;
  • Ensuring complete transparency with regard to compensation by requiring that real estate firms disclose to all parties any compensation offered to a firm by another party or another real estate firm;
  • Modernizing and simplifying the “pamphlet” that brokers must provide to consumers which explains general information about real estate brokerage relationships. Below is a link to the Legal Bulletin from the NorthWest MLS.

Gratitude For What Matters by Willard Aldrich

Thanksgiving has always been a special holiday for me usually gathered round a table laden with delicious food and cherished family. Since moving to Port Ludlow/Port Townsend, Thanksgiving has almost always included my father. My father passed away about two years ago at the age of 96. He spent the last half of his life writing poetry. It became a tradition for my father to read a poem he had written for that particular Thanksgiving. I would like to share one of the poems he wrote in 2018 that I have found especially meaningful.

Today, a symbol of our continuous gratitude, a reflection of the spirit of Plymouth and Jamestown, a giving of thanks for shared values and virtues, that sustained them then and sustain us now in the face of the unknown and uncertain.

Theirs more than a thank you for wild fowl and what could be gathered from the forest.

Ours more than stocks and cheap goods.

What sustained them then was kinship, friendship, and citizenship.

What today could we be thankful for more than these around this table? Family, friends, community.

My husband, Laury, has dementia. We are very fortunate that, so far, he has been able to live at home. This is primarily because of his wonderful caregivers; Beth, Susan, and Katie. These three angels are dependable, caring, flexible, and unbelievably patient. I never worry about Laury while he is in their care.

Minor Kitchen Remodel 101

**Why a Minor Kitchen Remodel Can Significantly Increase Your Home’s Value**

A kitchen, often touted as the heart of the home, plays a pivotal role in determining a property’s overall appeal and value. Many homeowners, when thinking about home improvements, consider major overhauls that can be both time-consuming and costly. However, minor kitchen remodels can be just as impactful in enhancing a home’s value. Here are some reasons why:

1. **First Impressions Matter:** For many potential buyers, the kitchen is one of the first rooms they inspect. A refreshed and modern kitchen can make a strong positive impression, leading them to view the rest of the home in a favorable light.

2. **Functional Improvements:** Minor remodels, such as adding a new backsplash, updating cabinet handles, or installing a new faucet, can make the kitchen more functional. Improved functionality can translate to a higher perceived value for potential buyers.

3. **Modern Aesthetics:** Trends in kitchen design evolve over time. Simple updates like repainting cabinets, upgrading countertops, or installing new lighting fixtures can transform an outdated kitchen into a contemporary space.

4. **Cost-Efficient:** Compared to a full kitchen renovation, minor remodels are more affordable. This means homeowners can achieve a significant return on investment (ROI) without breaking the bank.

5. **Faster Sale:** A visually appealing and modern kitchen can attract more potential buyers, leading to quicker sales. Faster sales often translate to higher sale prices, as properties that linger on the market can be perceived as less desirable.

6. **Energy Savings:** Minor updates, like adding a more efficient faucet or upgrading to LED lighting, can lead to energy savings. These eco-friendly changes not only reduce utility bills but can also appeal to environmentally-conscious buyers.

7. **Enhanced Enjoyment:** While the primary focus of this post is on increasing home value for potential sale, it’s worth noting that homeowners themselves can derive more pleasure from a newly remodeled space, even if it’s just a minor update.

My Visit to the Lush and Lovely Naylor Creek Vineyard

Last month, my stepmom Barb Aldrich and I were invited to John and Mary Kapp’s amazing home and property on Dabob Bay. John gave us a tour of their estate-quality property which features lush gardens overflowing with colorful flowers all visible as we strolled through the walking paths and sitting areas, that were accentuated with ponds and waterfalls. John has cleverly hidden speakers throughout so that no matter where you are on this stunning property you hear music. We visited on a clear, sunny day with the Olympic Mountains and Dabob Bay in full view. Mary prepared a delightful al fresco lunch which we enjoyed on the deck overlooking their beautiful grounds and views. It was truly a magical day!!

Along the way John and Mary planted a vineyard which they named Naylor Creek Vineyards. It is now mature enough to produce many cases of delicious red wine, some of which I purchase, self-label, and give as gifts.

By the way, John Kapp is a mortgage broker specializing in Reverse Mortgages. He associates with Watermark Capital and has helped some of my clients and friends brighten their financial picture during retirement. If you would like more information about his vineyard or mortagage products, give him a call at (360) 316-1068 or email him at john.kapp@wmreverse.com

It’s The Great Pumpkin!

Title: The History of Pumpkin Picking: From Ancient Beginnings to Modern Tradition

As the days grow shorter and the air crisper, families and friends embark on an age-old tradition that ushers in the fall season like no other: visiting a pumpkin patch. These patches offer a quintessential autumn experience, but have you ever wondered about the history behind this beloved tradition? Let’s take a quick journey through time to explore the fascinating history of picking out a pumpkin from a pumpkin patch.

**Ancient Beginnings**

Pumpkins have a rich history dating back thousands of years to the ancient Americas. Indigenous peoples were the first to cultivate pumpkins. Early varieties looked quite different from today’s pumpkins; they were smaller, tougher, and more bitter.

**Native American Influence**

Pumpkins played a significant role in Native American cultures. Indigenous communities used them not only for sustenance but also for medicinal and spiritual purposes. Pumpkins were roasted, seeds were consumed, and the flesh was dried for preservation. Native Americans even fashioned containers and mats from pumpkin shells.

**Colonial America**

When European settlers arrived in the Americas, they adopted pumpkins into their diets, thanks to the guidance of Native Americans. By the 17th century, pumpkins had become a dietary staple for early settlers, and they adapted their traditional recipes to include this versatile fruit.

**Jack-O’-Lanterns and Halloween**

The tradition of carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns has its roots in Ireland, where turnips and potatoes were initially carved. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to North America, where pumpkins proved more suitable for carving. This practice became associated with Halloween, serving as a means to ward off evil spirits.

**The Emergence of Pumpkin Patches**

Modern pumpkin patches began to take shape in the mid-20th century. These patches offered a unique twist on traditional farm visits, allowing families to explore fields of pumpkins while enjoying activities like hayrides and corn mazes. This concept gained immense popularity, turning pumpkin patches into a hallmark of the fall season.

**The Contemporary Tradition**

Today, picking out a pumpkin from a pumpkin patch is a cherished autumn tradition that transcends generations. Families and friends visit these patches to relish the simple joy of wandering through pumpkin-filled fields, searching for the perfect specimen. Pumpkin patches often offer additional attractions like petting zoos, apple picking, and cups of warm apple cider.

What started as a practical food source for indigenous communities evolved into an iconic symbol of fall and Halloween. The next time you find yourself in a pumpkin patch, take a moment to appreciate the deep-rooted history behind this beloved autumn tradition.
